Independence Middle School has implemented a new class to assist seventh
graders in obtaining a higher level of reading comprehension. This
program is referred to as the READ 180. It is an intensive reading
intervention program that confronts the problem of adolescent illiteracy
and special needs reading. This program incorporates many methods that
have proven to assist those struggling readers. The program uses
technology, smaller sized classroom, individualized instruction,
auditory assistance, and computer software to enhance the learning of
the students as well as engage the student in the learning process. Even
with the class ratio smaller the program is design for students to work
together in small group and students help each other so that they feel
part of a team. Independence Middle School is anticipating great
results. This program was chosen due to the success it had obtained in
nearby schools in Tangipahoa parish as well as other areas of the United
States
